Shanghai Port has processed more than 46 million TEU so far this year, tightening its lead in global container rankings despite a slowdown in monthly growth, reports London's Port Technology International.
China's 12 leading mainland ports handled 22.69 million TEU in October, up just over 1 per cent from September, bringing year-to-date volumes to 222.6 million TEU.
Shanghai moved 4.54 million TEU in October, down 6.2 per cent from September's 4.83 million TEUs after a summer peak. Still, throughput has risen 6.5 per cent year-on-year to 46.07 million TEU.
Ningbo-Zhoushan handled 3.80 million TEU, nearly flat month-on-month but up 10.5 per cent year-to-date. Shenzhen rebounded to 3.14 million TEUs, a 19 per cent monthly rise and 6.1 per cent higher than last year. Guangzhou posted 2.32 million TEU, up 15 per cent on the month.
Beibu Gulf climbed to 950,000 TEU, a 13 per cent monthly increase and 10.5 per cent higher year-on-year. Northern ports were more subdued, with Tianjin slipping to 1.92 million TEUs though still three per cent higher year-on-year, and Qingdao easing to 2.77 million TEU but up 7.2 per cent for the year.
The figures highlight stronger momentum in South China while Shanghai continues to dominate national throughput with unmatched scale.
