Vice Minister of Transport of the People Republic of China, Fu Xuyin, has expressed strong satisfaction with the success of Hong Kong Maritime Week (HKMW) 2025, noting that the event has set the stage for Hong Kong expanded role in China shipping and aviation development over the next five years.
"The Fifteenth Five-Year Plan proposals emphasize the need to consolidate and enhance Hong Kong status as an international maritime centre continuously, reflecting the nation's high expectations for the city's maritime industry," said Mr Fu.
He added that the Ministry of Transport would continue to support Hong Kong in strengthening its position, leveraging the role of local shipping enterprises, and integrating more deeply into national development while working with the global maritime community to forge a lue Bond of shared future.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee highlighted the city's role as a stable, reliable and dynamic maritime hub, pointing out that Hong Kong has been ranked fourth globally as an international shipping centre for six consecutive years.
"Our standing is consistently endorsed by the international community," Mr Lee said. Looking ahead, he reaffirmed Hong Kong determination to lead as a premier green maritime fuel-bunkering centre, with ambitions to become the epicenter of the global green maritime fuel trade.
Mr Lee also called for collaboration in building green shipping corridors and digital trade lanes to define the future of safe, efficient and sustainable global shipping. He stressed that Hong Kong policy support, expertise, and strategic vision would allow the city to play a pivotal role in navigating the next era of maritime development.
During HKMW, Mr Lee witnessed the official establishment of the Hong Kong P&I Club alongside distinguished guests, including Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People Political Consultative Conference C Y Leung; Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People Government in the Hong Kong SAR Mr Zhou Ji; Vice Minister of Transport Mr Fu; and Chairman of China Merchants Group Miao Jianmin.
The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Antonio Velasco, underscored Hong Kong strategic importance in a recorded speech. He described the city as a vital port and centre for maritime services, demonstrating that shipping remains a vibrant enabler of global trade.
Hong Kong Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, also expressed gratitude for the Central Government support. We are grateful for the backing in consolidating and enhancing Hong Kong position as an international maritime centre. The Hong Kong SAR Government will spare no effort to actively promote the development of the maritime industry," she said.
Ms Chan noted that the Chief Executive had announced plans to establish a ail-sea-land-river intermodal transport system to extend cargo sources from the Mainland and build partner port" relationships with Mainland ports. These initiatives align with Belt and Road strategies while promoting green shipping and digpital transformation.
Hong Kong Maritime Week 2025 featured a wide range of events hosted by local, Mainland and international organisations. The week achieved a record level of participation, attracting more than 18,000 delegates from around the world.
