Greek shipowner George Economou's TMS Group is expanding its containership fleet with a new series of LNG dual-fuel vessels at Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard in China, reported Singapore's Splash 247.
Industry sources said TMS is planning up to 10 neo-panamax vessels of 11,400 TEU, including eight firm orders and two options, with deliveries scheduled for 2028. The move doubles the group's containership orderbook at the yard.
Earlier this year, Economou placed a similar series at Zhoushan Changhong, with each ship valued at about US$140 million. Those orders were backed by charters, though it is unclear if the new batch will be tied to contracts.
Analysts estimate the latest commitment, worth around US$3 billion when combined with recent boxship deals, highlights continued confidence in the market despite global uncertainty.
Economou has also expanded in other sectors in 2025, securing LNG carrier newbuildings at Samsung Heavy Industries and VLCC slots at Hengli Heavy Industry, signalling a broad push across the shipping spectrum.
