Vietnam has become the Port of Savannah's fastest-growing trading partner, driven by manufacturing growth and logistics expansion, reports the Savannah Morning News.
Georgia Ports CEO Griff Lynch said Vietnam's strategic location and business-friendly policies are boosting trade. The US and Vietnam recently agreed to cut reciprocal tariffs to 20 per cent, with some categories potentially moving to zero. Savannah�� container trade with Vietnam has risen 38 per cent over five years, adding 104,000 TEU to reach 379,000 TEU in fiscal 2025.
Exports from Savannah include forest products, food, cotton, hardware, resins and consumer goods. Imports from Vietnam range from apparel and footwear to furniture, electronics and machinery. Georgia Ports currently offers nine direct carrier services between the two markets, with a tenth added on December 22 via Premier Alliance's EC2 service at Cai Mep. Transit times can be as short as 33 days.
In November, Gemini, a collaboration between Maersk and Hapag Lloyd, made Savannah its first US east coast call on the TP11/US1 service from Haiphong. The rotation now runs Haiphong-Ningbo-Shanghai-Lazaro Cardenas-Savannah-Charleston-New York-Singapore, with a 39-day transit from Haiphong to Savannah.
US-Vietnam trade reached about US$150 billion in 2024, making the US Vietnam's second-largest partner after China. Vietnam's� electronics sector continues to expand, with Samsung investing more than US$23 billion in plants that produce over half of its global smartphone output.
