THE volume of international cargo transported by Japan Airlines has sunk by 56.5 per cent in July to 20,411 tons on a year on year basis, representing the 14th straight month of declines.
However, the result was a slight improvement on June's drop of 58.5 per cent.
The carrier's domestic cargo volume decreased by 21.4 per cent to 33,843 tons in July compared to the same month last year. These figures have fallen for 13 months in a row, but the rate of decline was slower than the 23.8 per cent drop seen in June.
In the first four months of fiscal 2011, the airline's international cargo volume amounted to 78,274 tons, down 58.4 per cent year on year. Domestic cargo volume in the April-July period came to 119,753 tons, down 21.4 per cent against the previous year.
The report added that the Japanese airline suspended operation of its own freighter flights at the end of October 2010 and has since then utilised the cargo belly space of its passenger aircraft.
