Air freight throughput at Changi edges up 2.2 pc in September
Date:2011-10-26 Readers:

CHINA's HNA Group Co Ltd and Hong Kong's private equity investor Bravia Capital recently announced they have acquired Turkey's ACT Airlines, an air cargo operator based in Istanbul, Turkey, and have rebranded it as "MyCargo Airlines".

MyCargo Airlines, now a new air cargo arm for both HNA and Bravia, will partner HNA's logistics arm Grand China Logistics Group (GCL) to penetrate SINGAPORE's Changi Airport handled 154,400 tonnes of cargo in September, an increase of 2.2 per cent over the same month last year. Air freight movements amounted to 1.38 million tonnes in the first nine months of the year, representing a growth of 2.5 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

Figures released by the airport showed that Changi handled 3.82 million passenger movements in September, an increase of 12.5 per cent year on year, while aircraft movements grew in tandem, increasing 16.4 per cent to 25,500 movements during the month.

For the first nine months of the year, Changi Airport handled 34.2 million passenger movements, a year on year increase of 11.3 per cent. Traffic on low-cost carriers, accounting for a quarter of the total at Changi, surged 26.0 per cent, while traffic on full-service carriers grew 7.1 per cent during the same period. Aircraft movements increased 13.8 per cent during the nine months, with Changi Airport handling 221,900 flights.

Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia have been the major contributors to passenger traffic growth at Changi Airport year to date. However, the sustainability of this growth may be impacted by weaker travel demand to and from Europe and the United States as a result of increasing economic uncertainty in these regions.
