Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI) hosted the Top-level Round-table Forum on International Port Development 2010, which focused on future strategic transformation of China port development. On November 17-18, 2011, SISI is once again embracing talents in port, logistics and shipping industry worldwide to attend the SISI Forum on International Port & Shipping Development 2011 highlighting a joint approach to new trend in port logistics. SISI, as the host, and our supporting organizer, Erasmus Smart Port Rotterdam (ESPR), and, Shanghai-Hong Kong International Maritime R&D and Communication Centre (IMRDCC), presented the forum at Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel.
The constant expansion of the modern logistics industry promoted by the rapid development of economic globalization and information technology, have enriched the connotation of ports and logistics, which is represented to a large extent by the flourishing of inland dry ports. As industries transfer towards inland area, the strategic importance of port logistics has become all the more prominent. Ports are faced with new opportunities and challenges.
What is likely to be the path of modern ports and logistics progress in the coming five years? How will the upcoming information technologies boost the development of ports and logistics? How will the development of ports and logistics promote the progress of regional economy? What is the prospect of dry port and special tariff concession zone? Some 300 professionals and global industrial players in ports and shipping have gathered together to find their answers via the platform for exchanges of professional observations and proven experiences at the forum.

Ltd., Shanghai Integrated Bonded Area Management Committee, Antwerp Port Authority, World Maritime University, Erasmus Smart Port Rotterdam, Port of Rotterdam, Korea Maritime Institute, IMC Group, JadeWeser Port Logistics Zone addressed the conference with their enlightening insights and foresights.
According to Mr. Song Dexing, Director of Water Transport Bureau, Ministry of Transport, the strategic transformation of ports is the irresistible trend of China’s ports. Efforts ought to be pooled in mainly the following three aspect—attach greater importance of the environment and resource-saving while we enhance the handling capacity of ports; concentrate on the quality and efficiency in port development; and lastly, take innovation as the logical path to development and strive to facilitate policy-making and mechanism innovation.

The next focus for competent authorities in Shanghai will be the transformation of government functions and management innovation.

Mr. Qian Yongchang, Chairman of China Communication and Transportation Association and former Minister of China’s Ministry of Transport, put forth four initiatives, namely, to innovate the development mode of port logistics through strengthening the interaction between global marine ports and dry ports; to extend the functions of port logistics for new profit growth points; to expand international strategic cooperation and integrate supply chains with port as their nodes; and to intensify informatization of port logistics and prop up port industry with high technology.

Mr. Huang Youfang, Vice President of Shanghai Maritime University and Deputy Director of Shanghai International Shipping Institute, accented the role port logistics play in promoting regional economy. He also lay out several major trends in the near future development of port logistics.
