Basel Convention eco-activists say HK Convention insufficient on scrapping
Date:2011-10-25 Readers:

A UNITED NATIONS environmental conference in Cartagena, Colombia, the Basel Convention about the ban on toxic waste has taken issue with the International Maritime organisation's (IMO) Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling

Delegates voiced concern that because the Hong Kong Convention has no intention of minimising the movement of toxic ships, it is not sufficient, and therefore the Basel Convention must continue to be active to prevent the dumping of old toxic ships on the beaches of developing countries, reported the Seattle-based Basel Action Network in a press statement from the convention.
