Mar,15 -- THE Port of Jiaxing, next to Shanghai to the south, saw a sharp year-on-year increase of 48.1 per cent in its container throughput to 45,100 TEU in February.
    In the same month, the port recorded an overall throughput of 4.6 million tonnes, 48.2 per cent, or 1.52 million tonnes more than in the same month last year, said Xinhua. Foreign trade cargo throughput surged 59.2 per cent to 532,000 tonnes.
    In February, Jiaxing's four new 10,000-tonne berths which started operation in the later half of last year handled 660,000 tonnes.
    During the first two months of this year, the port handled a total of 88,200 TEU, up 31.8 per cent year on year. Its throughput tonnage grew 18.4 per cent to 8.46 million tonnes. Foreign trade cargo weighed 1.04 million tonnes, up 36.1 per cent.
    Jiaxing is currently operating 11 container shipping lines. Its throughput averaged at 40,000 TEU, or 500,000 tonnes, per month. Since 2009, the port has had two or more berths become operational every month.
