Situated in Huangdao District on the west bank of Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone covers an area of approximately 15 square kilometers. As one of the first 14 state-level economic and technological development zones, the Zone was set up in Huangdao District as approved by the State Council on October 20, 1984. The construction officially started on March 28, 1985 with a planned area of 20.02 square kilometers. In March 1986, the Administrative Committee of Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone was established. In 1992, with the expansion of the Zone’s jurisdictional area to the whole of Huangdao District, Shandong Provincial and Qingdao Municipal governments decided to merge the Development Zone and Huangdao District, expanding the area to 181 square kilometers. Also in 1992, the state-level Free Trade Zone and the New Technology Industrial Development Experimental Zone were set up in the district. Afterwards, the provincial Phoenix Island Holiday and Tourist Resort, the state-level Qingdao Westcoast Export Processing Zone, and Qingdao Qianwan Bonded Port Area were respectively established in 1995, 2006 and 2008. Currently, Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone, including Huangdao District, has a total area of 274.1 square kilometers, six subordinate neighborhood offices, and a total population of 580,000 (including a household population of 312,000). Over the past 2 decades since the establishment of the Zone, under the leadership and support of central, provincial and municipal governments and through the arduous work and continuous efforts of all builders, the Development Zone has evolved from an outlying fishing village into a modern new town, featuring good investment environment, healthy and open economy, prosperous social services, and the most suitable living environment. |
