Logistics firm invests $87.5 million in Finland truck, ocean, air facility

DB Schenker Logistics is investing $87.5 million on the construction of a multi-modal hub and corporate office near Helsinki airport in Finland.

The first phase, involving a 25,000 square meter warehouse, is scheduled to start in the spring of 2011 and become operational a year later, the German global logistics company announced.

A 41,000 square meter logistics center is currently in the planning stage to handle domestic and international truck, air and ocean freight as well as for parcel services and deliveries to end customers.

Construction will begin in the summer of 2012 and the facility is expected to start operations in 2014.

"The project in Helsinki is so far one of the biggest investments in a new location in the history of our company. It will simplify workflows and further improve the quality of our service," said Karl Nutzinger, member of the Schenker AG Management Board responsible for European Land Transport.

"The new locations have excellent transport connections and benefit from their proximity to the airport as well as the new port in Vuosaari," said Goran Aberg, CEO of Schenker's Finnish subsidiary Oy Schenker East Ab.
