Gavin Roser, the new secretary-general of the European Freight and Logistics Leaders Forum (F&L), has called on the European logistics industry to offer best practice to combat climate change and to "adapt a wider world vision to create optimal conditions to support European import and export logistics activity beyond its comfort zone."
Speaking on the eve of the F&L Annual General Meeting in Antwerp, Belgium, from November 18 to 19, Mr Roser said: "The industry must collaborate much more closely to help reduce the effects of global climate change and the parts we can play in greening the supply chain. Logistics suppliers must collaborate in their use of equipment, put aside petty worries over competition issues with rivals, and offer best practice in the utilisation of equipment. There is too much empty running in Europe of ships and trucks that must be ended."
He went on to say, "There must be a bonfire of regulations that hinder successful logistics operations and to allow the sector to perform successfully in the future."
Mr Roser, managing director and proprietor of Glasgow-based Pantrak Transportation Limited, has advised the New Zealand government on privatisation of the National Shipping Line. He has undertaken major consultancy projects in the UK, the Middle East, New Zealand and Hong Kong. He is also the co-founder and deputy chairman of Coastlink, a short sea shipping network.
The secretary general aims during his tenure to boost membership of F&L in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the UK, which is one of the smallest groups in the Forum.
Speakers at the forum included: Miaojia Liu, assistant professor at the Centre for Maritime Economics and Logistics, Erasmus University, Rotterdam; Geert Pauwels, general manager IFB, a division of SNCB Logistics; and Eddie Bruyninckx, chief executive of Antwerp Port Authority.
