Dutch scholars hold workshop at SISI

Harry Geerlings and Bart Wiegmans were invited to hold a two-day workshop facing Chinese shipping and port industry players on July 7th and July 8th at Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI).


Harry Geerlings elaborated on the governance of ports, the emerging issue of sustainability, ports and innovation challenges and the transition in shipping activities while Bart Wiegmans probed into the changing port-city relation, the selection of ports of call by shipping liners, deep sea container carrier performance and ports as node in a multi-modal logistics network.


As many as 70 participants attended the workshop coming from such organizations as Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and CCCC Third Harbor Consultants Co., Ltd. The audience had an active interaction with the two Dutch scholars.


Harry Geerlings is professor in the Governance of Sustainable Mobility at the School of Public Administration and Sociology of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is scholar of SmartPort 2.0 (a cooperation between the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Delft University of Technology and the Rotterdam port community). For more than 25 years he is specialized in research in the domain of sustainable transport; most of this research is related to the interaction between transport, environment and spatial planning. Bart Wiegmans is senior researcher at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Delft University of Technology. He is specialized in spatial and transport economics subjects concerning maritime and intermodal freight transport. His main research interest and expertise is in performance research, cost modelling, and competition issues.
