Black Sea grain deal ship inspections halted as deadline looms
Date:2023-05-19 Readers:
THE United Nations has reported that no ships have been inspected under the Black Sea export agreement that was brokered by Turkey and the UN to ensure the safe export of Ukrainian grain, which Moscow has threatened to leave on May 18, reports Reuters.

The deal, which was implemented by officials from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN, aims to help solve a global food supply that has been hampered by the war in Ukraine.

Nearly 30 million tonnes of grain and foodstuffs have been exported from Ukraine under the Black Sea deal, including nearly 600,000 tonnes of grain transported in World Food Programme vessels for aid operations in several countries.

Ukraine submits a list of ships to be authorised by the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC), which inspects the ships before they travel to a Ukrainian Black Sea port to collect their cargo and return to Turkish waters for a final inspection.

The UN has stated that no inspections were conducted by the JCC and that the UN and Turkey are working to facilitate movements and inspections of inbound and outbound vessels while discussions for the future of the initiative continue.
