MERSIN International Port Management Inc (MIP) that runs Turkey's biggest container port, has joined PSA International, Akfen and IFM to build East Med Hub 2n (EMH2) terminal, for US$455 million, reports Rotterdam's Dredging Today.
The launch ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Mersin governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, deputy governor Ibrahim Kucuk, rear admiral Murat F?rat, Commander of the Mediterranean and Regional Garrison, Singapore ambassador to the Republic of Turkiye Kok Li Peng, MIP chairman Flemming Dalgaard, city protocol members, representatives from various sectors, and company executives.
According to an official statement, the EMH2 Project aims to significantly augment MIP's terminal in Mersin by elevating its capacity from 2.6 million to 3.6 million TEU.
The expansion involves extending the quay by 380 metres, resulting in a total length of 880 metres and a draft of 18 metres.
This extension will enable MIP to concurrently handle two Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULVCs) of up to 400 metres each.
MIP has outlined plans to complete the initial phase of EMH2 by the first quarter of 2025, with the overall project anticipated to conclude by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
The project encompasses the acquisition of eight new automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (aRMGs) and an additional four ship-to-shore cranes.
