A Liberian-flagged gas carrier ran aground off Egypt, triggering a state of emergency during the weekend amid fears of possible leakage or pollution.
The ship in question, a 14,800-cubic-metre LPG carrier named the Claudia Gas, ran aground in the Gulf of Aqaba, east of the Sinai Peninsula and west of the Arabian continent.
According to the data, the ship was built in 1990 and is owned by Benelux Overseas.
The 158-metre-long ship has been refloated and is being held at Sharm el-Sheikh port until an investigation is completed and the damage to the environment is assessed, local authorities said on Sunday.
Egyptian media, citing undisclosed sources, reported that the ship had suffered engine failure and that it was empty at the time of the incident.
