Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk has joined forces with wind turbine manufacturer Vestas to build a nacelle factory and logistics base within the new port of Mokpo, South Korea.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed in the presence of Kim Yong-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do Province, and Park Hong-ryul, Mayor of Mokpo City. The MOU clearly sets out the common goal of both parties - to create a highly competitive and sustainable supply chain for the offshore wind industry in Korea and to actively seek partnerships with local companies. To this end, JeollaNamdo and Mokpo City will provide the necessary administrative support and financial assistance to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.
Currently, the South Korean government is promoting the construction of offshore wind power projects and plans to significantly increase the installed offshore wind power capacity to 26.7 gigawatts by 2036. Vestas, as the industry's leading wind turbine manufacturer, has already won a number of orders in Korea. The company said that its investment programme with Maersk will closely follow the pace of market growth and the number of bids won to ensure rational allocation and efficient use of resources.
Tommy Rahbek Nielsen, Director of Operations at Vestas, said: "The offshore wind market in Korea is in a golden period of accelerated development and is expected to become the centre of the global offshore wind sector. Our V236-15 MW wind turbine will play a significant role in this market due to its superior technical strength and commercial performance."
Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, also expressed high expectations for the co-operation with Vestas. He sees the partnership as an important step for the company in project logistics in the Asia-Pacific region and a key milestone in its strategy to become an integrator of end-to-end logistics solutions," Clerc emphasised. We will continue to deepen our partnership with Vestas, which is based on a shared vision and a strong commitment to a green and sustainable future for the planet."
The two parties are currently in advanced discussions on the specific details of the investment approach and said they will reveal more information to the outside world when plans are finalised.
