Yesterday (August 11), a fire unfortunately broke out on the container ship MSC CAPETOWN III during berthing at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) at the Port of Colombo.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) reports that following the fire on the vessel, the SLPA acted quickly and effectively and managed to prevent potentially catastrophic consequences. The vessel, which is part of the SAFARI service, was discharging 995 TEU containers and loading 880 TEU containers at the time of the accident.
According to information provided by ShipSight, MSC CAPETOWN III is an 18-year-old container ship built in 2006, flying the Portuguese flag, which arrived at the port of Colombo from the port of Singapore on the evening of August 10th. The fire originated in the vicinity of about 100 containers in the hold and 60 containers on the deck and occurred in the area of the 41/43 hatch. The fire eventually escalated into an explosion.
H.J.K.U. Kumara, Director of Operations at SLPA, said, “The vessel, which was berthed at our terminal, had not previously shown signs of fire. However, during operations, our team identified the exact location of the smoke and an explosion ensued. Our firefighters, working with other port services, acted quickly to extinguish the fire and safely remove the affected cargo.”
He further added, “Our timely and decisive actions successfully prevented an incident that could have evolved into something catastrophic. Investigations into the cause of the fire and the condition of the cargo are still ongoing.”
