Ports
What? Containers now have a carbon footprint.
Date:2024-08-26 Readers:
At about 6:00 on August 8, under the protection of ‘Sea Patrol 06916’ and three high-powered tugboats, the 9100-car ro-ro ship ‘Lino Aurora’ built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. sailed away from the pier smoothly and started its maiden voyage. This marks the successful delivery of the world's largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier.

On 22 August, at the automated terminal of Qingdao Port in Shandong Province (Qingdao Port for short), the nation's first container carbon footprint accounting service report form was issued smoothly, marking the official launch of the port container carbon footprint accounting service platform developed by Qingdao Port, and Qingdao Port has become the first port in China that can provide online carbon footprint accounting services.

Carbon footprint refers to the carbon emissions generated during the process of processing raw materials, transport, production and sales of products, and it is also an important indicator to measure the degree of environmental protection of products in this process, and carbon footprint accounting is the process of accounting for carbon emissions in this process.

With the depth of the global policy to combat climate change, many international trade rules will product life cycle carbon footprint into the necessary assessment indicators. At present, the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism has begun trial operation, and will become the first economy in the world to impose ‘carbon tariffs’; the maritime industry, which is included in the EU emissions trading system, has begun to enter the levy period. Under the new development trend, high carbon emissions in any part of the supply chain will lead to more carbon control costs for products.

Since this year, Qingdao Port has taken the lead in the industry to carry out container carbon footprint online accounting service. According to ISO14067, PAS2050 and other standards, combined with the current carbon emission status and characteristics of the automated terminals, and based on the existing advanced production system, energy management system, etc., Qingdao Port has researched, developed and released a scientific, reasonable, practical, complete and interactive and user-friendly service platform for container carbon footprint accounting. It can realise real-time tracking and querying of the carbon footprint of containers in Hong Kong.

It is learnt that relying on the relevant services of the platform, the port can better meet the needs of product manufacturing enterprises, shipping enterprises and other customers to cope with the carbon tax and cargo owners, enrich the value-added services of container terminals, create service value and improve the core competitiveness of terminals. At the same time, it will also provide basic data support for exploring carbon footprint management, accelerate the promotion of carbon footprint management system construction, and provide reference and reference for the carbon footprint accounting of container terminals under the background of international carbon tax.

Ports are national pivotal and basic facilities, an important link in product logistics, and an important part of carbon footprint. Promoting carbon footprint accounting is crucial at this time when China is promoting the development of new quality productivity and accelerating the realisation of the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the state has issued the Opinions on Accelerating the Establishment of Product Carbon Footprint Management System, the Implementation Plan on Establishing Carbon Footprint Management System, and the Work Plan on Accelerating the Construction of Carbon Emission Dual-Control System, etc., encouraging leading enterprises to establish a product carbon footprint management system according to the level of development of the industry and their own actual practice, and driving upstream and downstream enterprises to strengthen their carbon footprint management and promote the overall green and low-carbon transformation of the supply chain. In 2021, Shandong ports took the lead in the national port and shipping sector by issuing the ‘14th Five-Year Plan for Green and Low-Carbon Ports’ and ‘Guidelines on Promoting the Construction of Near-Zero-Carbon Ports’ to comprehensively promote the ‘Zero-Carbon Actions’ in the whole process. Zero Carbon Action’. Driven by national and industry policies, Qingdao Port has continuously strengthened the green and low-carbon development of the port, promoted the cleanliness of port energy and the low-carbon development of the port, and continued to reduce carbon emissions, and continued to walk in the forefront of the industry's development.

In recent years, Qingdao Port has comprehensively planned carbon reduction technology routes and implementation paths, actively explored green and low-carbon port demonstration models that can be replicated and promoted in line with the actual situation of the port, and built the nation's first ‘Hydrogen + 5G’ automated container terminal, the first nationally produced, fully autonomous automated terminal, and was awarded the nation's first smart, green and ‘double five-star’ award. ‘Qingdao Port has been awarded the first intelligent and green port in China, the first to start the digital transformation of the whole scenario, and the first to carry out the carbon footprint accounting service, contributing the ‘Qingdao Port Solution’ to the development of related fields of the transport industry with its innovative wisdom and commitment.

In the future, Qingdao Port will further optimise and upgrade its service system to provide container carbon footprinting services for more shipping companies and related enterprises, and will continue to build an effective data collection and management system to develop carbon footprinting services for dry bulk, liquid bulk and passenger transport, so as to realise the full coverage of carbon footprinting services for the whole port area and cargo types, and to contribute to the ‘dual-carbon’ development of the transportation industry with higher-quality carbon footprinting services. With higher-quality carbon footprinting services, the company will contribute more to the realisation of the ‘dual-carbon’ goal in the transport industry.
