Algeria's transport ministry has unveiled plans for a major container port at El Hamdania, 80 kilometres west of Algiers, reports Johannesburg's Freight News.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of next year, with completion targeted for 2020/21. The port will have a handling capacity of 6.5 million TEU, positioning it among the region's largest.
The DZD45.4 billion (US$34.7 billion) initiative will be executed by China State Construction Corporation (CSCEC) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which will jointly manage the facility through a 49 per cent stake in a locally registered company.
Industry observers suggest the port could evolve into a strategic hub for Chinese trade flows across the western Mediterranean, enhancing Algeria's role in global shipping networks.
