Contecon Guayaquil moved over 14,000 TEU in a single week in September, its highest since operations began in 2007, reports London's Eurofruit.

The Ecuadorean terminal credited the milestone to infrastructure and technology investments exceeding US$390 million over 18 years. These include a $43.5 million cold storage facility launched in January with Cool Carriers, which has processed over 3 million boxes of fruit.

Chief executive Jesus Caceres said the achievement reflects customer trust, staff dedication, and support from authorities and partners. He added that long-term planning with clients remains a priority for sustainable growth.

Contecon Guayaquil is the largest multipurpose terminal in the world's top banana-exporting port. It currently handles about 59 per cent of Ecuador's imports from Asia.

A $10 million Special Economic Development Zone project is scheduled to begin in early 2026 to enhance the terminal's regional hub status.

The Chamber of Maritime Affairs of Ecuador said the record highlights Contecon's role in boosting port competitiveness, citing modernisation, digital platforms, and Asia trade as key growth drivers.
