March 9 2012 witnessed the visit of Martine Davies, professor of Tulane University and Director of Tulane Maritime Law Center, and Robert Fisher, partner of Chaffe McCall L.L.P. to Shanghai International Shipping Institute. The American guests came with the company of Mr. Lin Jiang, assistant to Director of Shipping Policy and Law Institute, Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI).
Tulane Maritime Law Center was created in 1982. The Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund formally approved a resolution establishing the Center as a division of the Law School in 1986. The Center enjoys good fame in admiralty and maritime law research.
Mr. Robert Fisher is presently head of Chaffe McCall's admiralty and maritime section. He has been involved in all areas of admiralty practice during his career. Major areas of concentration have included personal injury, arrests, and the handling of collision, dock damage, as well as numerous cases involving charter party issues, especially safe port and safe berth problems.
Prof. Martine Davies and Mr. Robert Fisher had a brief and friendly meeting with Prof. Zhen Hong, Secretary General of SISI, right after they came to SISI. Prof. Davies brought the sincere good wishes from Tulane University, and briefly introduced the University and Tulane Maritime Law Center. Prof. Zhen then introduced the main functions and primary missions of SISI, and hope the present visit of Tulane guests can herald a good beginning of both party’s research cooperation in the field of maritime law and marine safety.
Prof. Davies later gave a lecture at SISI’s conference center on the topic of Deepwater Horizon—the Macondo Blowout. He interpreted the progress of Macondo Oil Spill handling. The audience was so engrossed and quite impressed.
